Afternoon Tea in Malvern

The History of Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea has been a British tradition since 1840, when Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, used to request a tray of tea, bread and butter, and cake to her room in the late afternoon. By 1845, her high-tea habits had become a fashionable social event which friends and family attended together, and Afternoon Tea – or High Tea as it is sometimes called -developed into a popular tradition to enjoy with friends and family. As for our own history, The Cottage in the Wood Malvern first opened as a Tea Rooms in 1919, and operated as one until the 1950’s. It is rumoured the famous composer Elgar, who lived in Malvern, even performed here in the 1920s!
